The trumpet is characterized by its striking, triumphal sound and by the fact that it boasts the highest register of all the brass instruments. It does splendid work, single-handedly giving expression to heroism and jubilation.

History

The first known metal trumpets can be traced back to around 1500BC. Silver and bronze trumpets were discovered in the grave of King Tut in Egypt, and other ancient versions of the instrument were found in China, South America, Scandinavia, and Asia. Since most inventions spawn from earlier forms, theres also good reason to assume that people have been blowing into objects to create sounds for even longer than that.
Perhaps we call trumpets horns to this day, because the first recorded trumpet-like instruments were actually animal horns. Originally they would have been used in a Jewish religious ceremonies such as Rosh Hoshanah and Yom Kippur or they were used for religious and military purposes, which historians have pointed out in major religious writings and other historical records.

Instrument design, as well as metal making, improved tremendously over the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, which made these natural trumpets more suitable for creating actual music. However, these trumpets did not have valves and could only produce a small amount of notes.
Due to its limited amount of notes, usage of the natural trumpet started to fade during the Classical and Romantic periods. By the 1800s, instrument improvements, such as keys and valves, led to its chromatic use.
Another predecessor to the modern trumpet was the Slide Trumpet, another fellow renaissance trumpet from the 15th century.
The slide trumpet allowed musicians to use their embouchure along with a slide to extend the tubing and play a lot larger range of pitches.
Although referred to as a trumpet, the slide trumpet led to the development of what we know know as the trombone.

Throughout the 19th century, the Romantic music era was a period of particular popularity for the trumpet. The Romantic era was known for its drama, energy, and emotional quality. This was the original age of the opera, and songs were written as musical representations of popular literature, art, and theater.
From this point on throughout history, trumpets have typically had either 3 or 4 valves.
In 1815,
Heinrich Stölzel invented the first of what we call piston valves which work by rerouting air through the various tubes of the trumpets.
This was revolutionary for the trumpet and moreover brass instruments like the french horn and tuba.
Then four years after the Stölzel valve, Heinrich worked with another instrument maker
Friedrich Blühmel to invent the first Rotary Valve which became very popular too.
After this, in the late 1930s
François Périnet invented the version of the piston valve seen in most modern trumpets today.
Trumpets also play pivotal roles in pop music, and they have for decades.
Most notable is the use of the small trumpet cousin, the piccolo trumpet.
